Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. Feminist Frequency was founded by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of the depictions of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. She is the author and executive director of Feminist Frequency which is an education not-for-profit website that explores representations of women in popular culture narratives. Destroying stereotypes about women are her main focus. But, she also explores the issue of targeted harassment against women online and other minorities who have been left out. A graduate in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public presenter and has presented talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Feminist Frequency was launched on the 9th of September 2009 by Sarkeesian, an undergraduate student at York University who had been interested in issues that concern gender and feminism since a long period of. She had a plan to launch an internet series that examined gender representation in games, but was the target of a harassment campaign online. However, the attacks did not dissuade her. It only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. Numerous awards have been awarded to her as a way of acknowledging all the contributions that she made.
