Gunn was a student abroad at the British American Drama Academy during fall 1988. After moving in Laurel Canyon Los Angeles she resided in the same house as Pamela Adlon. Gunn was known best for her role as Skyler in AMC's Breaking drama. In 2013 and 2014 she won an award called the Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding supporting Female Actress in Drama Series. She also wrote an opinion article in August 2013 for The New York Times, discussing the negative reception of her portrayal.

She started her career as a television actor, appearing in the television movies Malibu (1983), California Girls (1985).
